Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in New York on December 10 is led by a 5.72-carat fancy intense blue diamond with an estimate of $6 million to $8 million. Also among the top lots are several jewels with large D-flawless diamonds. In addition, the sale features several important private collections containing signed jewels from historic jewelry brands including a rare group of Suzanne Belperron pieces. Elaborate Harry Winston pieces, jewels with important colored gems and signed jewels by Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, David Webb and others are included in this sale of 181 lots.
The 5.72-carat fancy intense cushion-shaped brilliant-cut blue diamond has been graded as VVS1 clarity by the Gemological Institute of America. Christie’s says the Type IIb diamond has the potential to be internally flawless. The blue diamond is mounted on a platinum ring flanked by round colorless diamonds.
Among the top diamond jewels in the sale are:
A pair of Harry Winston diamond cluster earrings featuring two D-flawless Type IIa diamond pendants, each weighing more than 10 carats. Its estimate is $1.2 million – $1.5 million.

A 20.08-carat D color VS1 clarity diamond on a platinum ring with round diamonds with an estimate of $800,000 – $1.2 million.
A platinum ring centered with a 19.14-carat emerald-cut diamond with D-color and VS1 clarity. The main stone is flanked by several baguette-shaped diamonds. Its estimate is $700,000 – $1 million.

There are 37 Van Cleef & Arpels jewels in the sale. Among them is an elaborate ruby and mystery-set interchangeable “Mysterious Ribbon” necklace that combines caliber-cut sapphires, round diamonds on 18k white gold. The piece is accompanied by two interchangeable attachments: round rubies and diamonds, and 18k white and rose gold. Its estimate is $600,000 – $800,000.
Among the nine Harry Winston jewels in the auction is a platinum ring centered with a 10.29-carat D-flawless emerald-cut diamond flanked by tapered baguette-cut diamonds. Its estimate is $450,000 – $650,000.

In addition, there’s a pair of Harry Winston platinum and 18k yellow gold earrings featuring two mixed-cut reddish-pink spinels of 22.42 and 21.87 carats. The gems are from Tanzania and are without heat treatment or clarity enhancements. Topping the two main sapphires are oval and round diamonds.
The sale also includes a lot without reserve. An 18k yellow gold and platinum ring centered with 32.41-carat fancy intense cut-cornered rectangular modified brilliant-cut yellow diamond. It is flanked by two rectangular-shaped diamonds and has an estimate of $350,000 – $450,000.

The auction at Christie’s Rockefeller Center headquarters contains at least three private collections of signed jewels led by a collection that includes 15 jewels by iconic French designer, Suzanne Belperron. Titled “Jewels as Art,” Claibourne Poindexter, Christie’s senior specialist of Jewelry, calls it “one of the most impressive assemblages of Suzanne Belperron jewels ever to come to auction.”

The top lots among the Belperron pieces is a platinum and 18k gray gold “Tube” bracelet, circa 1948, featuring old- and single-cut diamonds (estimate: $400,000 – $600,000); and a sliver “Cuff” bracelet, crica 1934, an iconic Belperron design, with rock crystal plaques and old-cut diamonds (estimate: $200,000 – $300,000). It was owned by Diana Vreeland, the former editor-in-chief of Vogue.
