PARIS — Chanel has created a new e-logo for its partners authorized to distribute its fragrance and beauty products online.
“This e-logo allows consumers to easily identify whether Chanel cosmetics are being sold by authorized partners, thus ensuring that they are buying authentic products that comply with all quality standards,” Chanel said in a statement.
The e-logo was registered as a trademark with official organizations so as to protect consumers by clearly identifying the French luxury house’s approved partners, it said. The e-logo has been gradually rolled out around the world.
Copycat cosmetics abound.
“Cosmetics are one of the most dangerous counterfeit item categories and in the top-eight product categories most often subjected to counterfeiting and piracy in terms of global customs seizures,” according to the Personal Care Products Council, which calculated the cosmetics industry loses about $5.4 billion yearly to fraudulent sellers.
Dupes, fueled by TikTok and accentuated by economic pressures today, are another phenomenon ever more blurring the line between original and fake products.

Counterfeit designer handbags, wallets and sunglasses have long been lures for criminals, too.
Chanel has already put in place safeguards for other product categories. Its handbags have an integrated authenticity plate, which replaced the authenticity card. The house’s small leather goods boast an authenticity stamp, while ready-to-wear products have an authenticity label. Such features grant easy access to serial numbers that are needed for after-sale services, as well as serve to identify authenticity.
