The final weekend of the regular season is filled with college football’s biggest rivalries. Some of the marquee match-ups have major implications in the new 12-team College Football Playoff chase as well as securing spots in conference championship games. But these games are also the most exciting and meaningful contests of the season to the players, coaches and fan bases, as rivalry games bring out the greatest emotions, energy and effort.
Ticket prices have soared to record high for a college football game in College Station for the Texas Longhorns at Texas A&M Aggies game. The renewed rivalry is being played for the first time since 2011 – when A&M joined the SEC before Texas moved to the Southeastern conference this season.
A win by Texas (10-1) puts them in the SEC championship game. The Lonhorns are currently 6-1 in SEC play, and Texas A&M (8-3) is 5-2 in conference play. A win by the Aggies puts them in the SEC Championship game. The winner will play Georgia (9-2/6-2), who has clinched their spot in the SEC title game.
The four highest-ranked conference champions will receive the top-4 seeds and a bye into the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. Boise State from the Mountain West would currently receive one of those spots despite being ranked No. 11, which is higher than the Big 12’s top-ranked team, No. 14 Arizona State.

The watch and wager action will peak over Thanksgiving weekend as fans give thanks for family, friends, football and a feast while enjoying all the fixings. That includes “The Game” in the Big Ten between Ohio State (10-1) and Michigan (6-5). The preseason betting line was Ohio State -9.5, and now the Buckeyes are laying -20.5 points. A win by No. 2 Ohio State sets up a rematch with No. 1 Oregon (11-0) in the Big Ten Championship game with those two teams playing a thrilling contest in October won by Oregon 32-31.
The Egg Bowl rivarly between Ole Miss (8-3) and Mississippi State (2-9) is one of four Top 25 games on Friday after Thanksgiving. Jeff Lebby is the first-year head coach at MSU after serving as assistant under Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin. Even with a losing season and winless in the SEC, Lebby explains what the Egg Bowl rivarly means, which sums up the emotion and meaning for players, teams and fan bases across the country.
“I think for me, there’s this great understanding that this game is a huge deal. Knowing what it means to our fanbase, to our university, to our community in Starkville, it’s a big deal,” Lebby said. “From a recruiting standpoint and how we recruit against each other in this state, on Friday afternoon we got a ton to play for and we need to be at our best.”
Saturday’s rivarlies include the Iron Bowl between Alabama and Auburn, which follows the ACC-SEC state rivarly between Clemson and South Carolina. Saturday night is the Top-25 matchup between Texas and Texas A&M for a spot in the SEC Championship game. In Las Vegas it’s the battle for the Fremont Canon as UNLV tackles Nevada with the UNLV Rebels cracking the AP Top 25 and CFP Top 25 for the first time in program history. A win by UNLV sets up a rematch with Boise State in the Mountain West Championship game. The ACC Championship game will feature Southern Methodist (SMU) vs. Miami if they beat Syracuse, or Clemson if Miami loses.
The Big 12 has four teams tied at 6-2 in conference play – Arizona State, BYU, Iowa State and Colorado. If all four teams win this weekend, then Arizona State plays Iowa State in the Big 12 Championship game. If exactly two of those teams win, then the two winners will play in the title game. There are still nine teams mathematically alive to play in the Big 12 Championship game.
