Patek Philippe 2499, First Series, in pink gold Wenger case.
Sotheby’s
Sotheby’s Treasures of Time auction was one of the more exciting of the recent Geneva season, with a variety of very special and rare vintage Pateks. The pick of the bunch however, was lot 16.
Patek Philippe’s 2499 has been a collectors favourite, representing one of the brands more exclusive lineups better than any other watch. Bearing in mind that perpetual calendars were far more arduous to build back in the 1950s, so much so that Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe were the only brands serially producing them at the time. With the added chronograph, the 2499 went a step beyond in complexity, and it remains an icon to the modern day. For a full breakdown of the reference, click here.

This particular example is a collectors dream, if any old 2499 wasn’t already enough. Firstly, it falls into the first series of production from between 1951 and 1956, which contributed less than 50 units to the grand total of 349 that were produced for the reference as a whole.Vichet, key 9, was responsible for the production of the first series, in nearly all instances. This watch however is an exception, and to my knowledge remains the only Wenger cased 2499 to ever reach auction (this is its second appearance). It takes a larger and more robust stature with studier lugs compared to how Vichet cased up, and so it remains notably different even at first glance. As well as this, its cased in pink gold, which was rare during this era when yellow gold almost entirely dominated production.

Referring to it as museum grade would be an understatement, as even the Patek Museum isn’t home to one of these. There are only three known in total, reflected in the final price of $3.5 million, 31% greater than its last appearance in 2012.
